The Order of Interbeing Wiki
A Wiki is a collaborative website that contains the collective knowledge of a community. The term Wiki comes from the Hawaiian term Wiki-wiki meaning quick and refers to the ease with which a Wiki knowledge base can be edited by those who have access to it.
Our OI Wiki contains information about monastic and lay practice, national and regional procedures for joining the order, historical documents, talks to Order Members by Thich Nhat Hanh, and other materials.
Everyone is welcome to learn from and practice with these materials. A good place to begin is by reading the contents of this page.
If you are an Order of Interbeing Member and would like to contribute to the development of our knowledge base, please register by send an email message to the WikiAdmin (wikiadmin [at] orderofinterbeing [dot] org). Please include your full name, ordination name, and ordination location. A guide for contributors to this website is available on the Help:Contents Page
If you are not an Order of Interbeing Member and wish to correct or augment something in our Wiki, please let our Wiki administrator know of your concerns by emailing her at wikiadmin [at] orderofinterbeing [dot] org.
Editing this Wiki
Please read these pages to help you understand how to contribute:
Wiki Editing Tips | Ground Rules | Contributors
The wiki will be a great environment to collaborate on document creation. If you have ideas for things to work on together, start a new page or edit one of the existing pages (see categories below) and see what happens. Remember, anyone with an account can make changes to the content of the wiki, including reverting back to previous versions of a page.
Getting started
There are several options for finding articles. The first option is to type the term you're hoping to find into the search field. However, because we're just getting started, there are only a small number of articles at this point. When you click on the "recent changes" link on the navigation box to the left, you'll see pages that have been worked on recently. You might like to just click on "random page" and take pot luck! An organizational tool we'll be using is the "Category" feature. Categories sort the articles, and examples are listed below. Scroll down to the bottom of each page to see the category listings. Click on any of those to see a list of articles within that category. Over time, we'll be building organizational schemes to make the wiki as user friendly as possible.
How can I contribute?
Contributing to the wiki is fun and easy! Feel free to get started! The first step is to register (send an email message to the WikiAdmin, wikiadmin [at] orderofinterbeing [dot] org) and login. After you've read the "Editing tips" and "Ground rules", here are some first steps to guide you to becoming an active contributer:
- Make minor edits to an existing page - add or subtract a coma, fix a spelling error, change a sentence for grammer, etc. Just click on the "edit" tab at the top, make your change, click the "this is a minor edit" box at the bottom, add a short comment about the change you made in the "Summary:" field, and click "Show preview". If you're happy with your change, click "Save page" and you're done!
- You might like to add to an existing article. Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings is an example. The 14 trainings are listed, but the article lacks an introduction. Click on "edit" and start typing right after the first sentence. If you want to add information in the body of the article (like Plum Village), click "edit" and scroll to the area you'd like your new information to go (like between "Hamlets" and "See also"). You might want to add a paragraph about "Special activities", for example. To create the heading for the new section, you would type ==Special activities==, press enter to start a new line, and write your section. Follow the rest of the instructions above, remembering to preview your work first, then click "Save page". You'll see your changes immediately on the page.
- There are many pages that can be created (Mindfulness, Dharmacharya are two examples. You'll notice that these words are red in color. Blue words are ones you can click on to find an article about that word. Red words are ones that do not yet have articles written for them. When you click the red word, you'll be taken to a page that will allow you to create that article if you wish. You can also type the word into the search field and if there is no article, you will be invited to write one. Don't worry if the formatting isn't perfect or complete, others will come along and help develop the article.
- If it bothers you or you don't feel ready to have your work modified, not to worry. You can still contribute! Please consider writing an article for the Order of Interbeing website[1]. That way, your article will be on a website page that is "static" (meaning that other users can read it, but can't modify it). Just email the article to the webteam for upload. Be patient - while with the wiki pages, the article apprears instantly, it may take awhile for your article to be uploaded on the static part of the website.
- What if I mess up? The beauty of wiki pages is that you can't break anything! If you mess up, the page can be reverted back to the version prior to your entry, or you can click edit again and fix things manually. Be brave! You'll learn by doing and it's ok to have minor edits to fix small things. You can click on the "history" tab of any page to see what changes have been made in the development of the page. If you can't figure out how to mangage, just email the webteam and we'll be happy to help! You can also ask for help from other contributers, just add a notation to a talk page and describe the problem.
Hopefully, you'll catch the wiki bug and contribute lots of information to this site that we'll all enjoy and benefit from! The synergy of people working together can yield amazing and wonderful results.
